Educational Opportunities?

Celebrate Recovery at Grace Pl started this conversation

People often suggest that I "Go Back to School" to get a job. That is great, but when I do not have money to pay my bills, it is hard to find money to pay for school. I have a B.A. in Psychology that I got almost 30 yrs. ago. I have not been in school since. Well maybe if possible, I can go back and try for a "Certification" program. How about being a CAC, Certified Addictions Counselor, or possibly something in the medical field? I'll have to start looking into that!

Lisa, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I know it is not easy, but all I can do is try. When I was in college in Miami, FL, there were many people of "older" age giong back to school. I said back then that if needed, I'd return too!

Hi,

I am in college again at the age of 46. I had a medical career as a nurse until I became ill and was not able to do the work involved in the job I loved so much. Now I am finding it difficult to find funding to get my Bacelors, I will have my Associates in my new field in May. I did this through the loans at Sallie Mae. I did not qualify for the Pell grant because we make just overthe allowed amount. I have been applying for academic scholarships and grants, without success now for over a year. I have a 3.93 GPA. I think that most grants are targeted towards highschool students.

If you want to go back to school talk to the financial counselor at your chosen school, they will help you find financing that you are eligible for. I did get my first degree done, I just need hep getting to the next step, and then I will have a new career in something that I am able to do........Good Luck.......Lisa

Anora, Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I will persue that career path further. I am a volunteer in a recovery program, and see many with Chemical Addiction issues. Besides alcohol, "pain" pills, and crack cocaine are big problems here in the southern part of Florida.

I'm a teacher so I believe it's never too late to go back to school or continue as the case may be. We really do need more good CAC who are willing to look both at the mundane causes of addiction but also the spiritual causes of addiction. If you are up for it I say go back. My own father when to college when he was 50 and he says he doesn't regret it though there were times he admitted to being frustrated as the "math" had changed since he last went. You'll do fine, I'm sure. Just make sure that the college you do attend is accredited. I made the mistake of going through an online college that was accredited in one state but not in another. I started it when in Arizona and when I moved to Minnesota I found all of the work I had done was not accepted here so I had to enroll at a local university to finish my masters degree.

O.K., Thanksgiving Day is over. Now the real "Thanksgiving" begins. Feeling a little down like me, well now think about what you ARE thankful for.

I am thankful for:

God, whose love and blessings keep me going!

My Church who is always there when I need love and guidedance.

My Sister & her family for their love and help in tough times.

My Country, the USA, where I am enjoying the freedom.
